History of Copperwood Ranch

“Copperwood Ranch” was established with the aim of producing superior performance Quarter Horses.

“Champion.... the title bestowed upon the best in competition.”

Copperwood Ranch.....  By association means champion Quarter Horses, a fact borne out by the many notable wins the Stud’s horses have achieved over the years. However rather than rest on their laurels, the urge to produce the best is perhaps felt today even more than it was over four decades ago.

Copperwood Ranch was established by Doug Kefford and his late father at Narre Warren in Victoria in 1968. Both were impressed with the natural attributes of the Quarter Horse when they first encountered it, and shortly after the decision to establish Copperwood Ranch was taken. In 1971 the first stallion Amigo Lark arrived from the USA after a lengthy nine months quarantine in England. The following year, Pacific Niner, Dickeys Taffeta, Dickey Cindy, Dickey Sandy and Sage Skippy Le were also imported to form the foundation to what has become an outstanding broodmare band today. During this period Doug competed on a regular basis, particularly in Reined Cowhorse classes and brought to the Ranch some of its earliest competition successes. Over the years Copperwood Ranch bred horses have gone on to record some outstanding achievements having won over $1,000,000.00 alone in cutting competition, be it through own sons and daughters or through maternal grand-dams.
It was also during this period that a young Craig Kefford found that he had a liking for horses and competition and contested successfully in youth classes. As the Ranch grew, so did the need for a larger property, which necessitated the move to nearby Cranbourne in 1977. It was this time that the Ranch employed its first trainer, Phil Webb. His expertise together with the outstanding horses he had to work with brought Copperwood even more success and did much to prove the horses they were breeding. When Phil Webb moved to the USA to manage the newly established Copperwood Ranches Inc., Graham Amos took over the training position.
Following the move to Cranbourne the Stud began to increase its sire power with the purchase of Moonbi Cutting Futurity Champion, Poco Peppy Doc (by Doc O’Lena out of Salty Tulip, by Peppy San) and then the importation of 49’er Doc (by Mr. 49’er [Mr. Gunsmoke] out of Docs Skeena, by Doc Bar). The broodmare band already boasted own daughters of War Leo, Peppy San, Colonel Freckles, with King and Leo also contributing.

Early 1985 saw Graham return to his hometown of Dubbo and resume his own training operation, while Craig took over the complete training and management of the newly purchased ‘world class’ B. J. Lodge breeding facility at Goornong, near Bendigo in central Victoria. Craig, along with Graham the previous year, had enjoyed a very successful Cutting and Reined Cowhorse year, capturing the Reined Cowhorse Snaffle Bit Futurity  (Graham on Peppys Rosette), Moonbi Cutting Futurity (Craig on Delta Distinction), Moonbi Cutting Futurity Reserve Champion and 4th also (Graham – Peppys Rosette & Poco Miss Pacific), and Supersires Cutting Futurity Reserve Champion (Craig & Delta Distinction).

In addition to producing fine horses and winning major events, Copperwood has played its part in the development and growth of Australia’s Quarter Horse and Western Performance/Cutting industry. Both Doug and Craig are past Directors of the Australian Quarter Horse Association.  Craig is a past Director of the National Cutting Horse Association; Doug is a past president of the Australian Reined Cowhorse Association and still a Director of the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame. The Copperwood Incentive Program of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s set the cutting world on fire: cash and prizes were awarded to Owners, Breeders, Trainers and Non Professional riders in excess of $350,000 and undoubtedly was instrumental in the enormous growth of the Cutting Horse industry in Australia.
There is little doubt that the success of Copperwood bred horses particularly in Cutting Futurities, Derbies, Classic Challenges and other special events is due to an unswerving belief that only the best will do. An uncompromising breeding program that only allows for those horses and bloodlines that improve the product and an unshakeable confidence in what we are doing. Some may say that having won most of the titles and big events in this country there is really nothing left for Copperwood to do.

Surely the satisfaction that comes with success has been achieved.........

............This is however not the case for the last 45 years is just the start and indeed it could be said that we have reached the middle of a book – a book that has many chapters to write.

"A thrill to watch...... such outstanding position on a cow and he never quits!! So Intense! The harder the cow runs, the grittier and tougher he gets. A very dynamic stallion in every respect".

His family on the bottom side of his pedigree is one of the most successful producing families in history and his topside pedigree is most sought after. The 'Six Spins' cross over your mare will add that working desire and trainability that we all look for when breeding.

Don't have a few 'spins of the dice' when deciding on the sire of your next prospect............

Have 'Six Spins' in your mare instead.

Not often do you find a trained Dual Rey mare for sale: Here she is!! Only reason she is for sale is that I can't breed her to Six Spins, as they share the same Father. She is out of Copperlynx  who was a Multiple aged event finalist and did the whole Futurity, Derby and Classic program with Phil Dawson. Still has her classic Challenge years ahead of her. Big stopper and very cowy. 2012 Comet Futurity Reserve Champion, Victorian Futurity Finalist, DDCC Futurity Finalist, 2013 NCHA Derby Finalist.
 Guaranteed sound.

"Honey Theyre Achin"

What an absolutely beautiful Acres Destiny filly !! Started by Luke Bennett for and now with Dean Holden. She has had a consistent 18 months work. First foal offered for sale out of the amazing mare, Honey Don't Tell owned by Steve Felton. Honey Don't Tell has won a bunch of aged events and NCHA money. This is a seriously pretty mare that is very broke and well trained.
No offers: $35,000.00 plus GST.

"Drivemypa"

This colt is sure bred to work cows !!! Hydrive Cats' progeny will Debut at Tamworth this month, and we have his full sister, Hydrive Kitty showing. We were so impressed with Kitty, we bred his mother back to Hydrive. He is stout enough to break in now; giving you ample time to get heaps of miles under his belt. Good looking to boot...... Definite stallion material.

Looking for a stud Colt?? Here he is!! Teak N Tell is the older full sister to Honey Don't Tell, and Dean Holden is riding Teak's first foals by Acres, and she is an absolute cracker!! I have decided to keep her to go on with and perhaps ride her myself in time, 'post futurities'.
However, I have full confidence that this colt will be tuff, gritty, cowy and have a 'truck load' of ability. He is being started right now and I would be happy to continue on with him but, last year we added Six Spins to the team (Dual Rey - Triple Spin), so I already have a stallion..... "Here is Six Spins - Generation 2". This Colt will be as good as Six Spins, Dual Windstorm or Erin Flashy Rey.

Be on the ground floor with this very well bred 49'er Doc mare. As you can see, she is out of Roanies Lynx, the mother of the Hall of Fame Stallion Docs Spinifex. She is safely in foal to Six Spins and the foal will be one of only 6 bred last year, due to Six Spins' show commitments. I will load a couple of photos in due course, as I don't have any current photos at present. Guaranteed a sound and easy breeder: she was only inseminated one time in December last year and straight in foal. Still has a few foals left before she is too old.

"Mine Are Achin Too"

Very good quality colt: lots of cow; lots of bend, and a huge stop. He has had almost twelve months work already, with a lot of paddock riding, mustering and herd work with Troy Pycroft. He will definitely go either way.... draft or cutting. Nice length of rein, big hip and great attitude.
Definite stud material.
